Herng-Yow Chen, born in 1969 in Taipei, Taiwan, received his B.S. degree in Computer Science from Tamkang University in 1989 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from National Taiwan University in 1996. Since 1996, he has been living in Puli and teaching at National Chi Nan University, where he is currently a full-time Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. He served as the department's Chairman from 2021 to 2023. He has been a Joint Faculty Professor at the Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language and the Graduate Institute of Curriculum Instruction and Technology since 2010.
Dr. Chen is passionate about how humans acquire and learn language and music, and how technology can assist in this process. His research interests include learning psychology, accessible and assistive music technology, language education, brain science, and multimedia. He was a visiting professor at the Language Education Department at Indiana University from 2005 to 2006, exploring language learning methodologies. From 2004 to 2012, he served as Director of the Language Teaching and Research Center at National Chi Nan University, where he also mentored and advised numerous students in their academic and research pursuits.
At the age of 43, Dr. Chen decided to learn music. He began playing the cello and violin in 2010, and later took up the piano in 2012. Since then, he has been an member of the Butterfly Orchestra in Puli, where he plays the cello and collaborates with fellow musicians. His lab focuses on the intersection of music and language technology.
