All members of the LCC community have a story to tell about LCC student learning, including, what our students learn, how they learn, and how we go about successfully facilitating learning. Student learning assessment processes are how we go about regularly gathering and using evidence of student learning and as a way to share processes and outcomes of student learning so that we learn from each other and our students.
Our stories of student learning are valuable to many audiences. Yes, we have external accreditors that we report learning data to. For us, that’s the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). They have standards the college must apply and show evidence for. When it comes to learning, we need to show we are providing a quality, equitable education. We have other external audiences such as our community and our board of trustees. They have expectations of what every student at LCC learns so that they are prepared for successful employment or transfer.
Internally, we have each other to share our learning stories with. Students, faculty, and staff. Talking to each other about teaching concepts in our courses, how students are progressing, or not, and instructional strategies we use to facilitate learning.
Our student learning assessment webpages are aimed at supporting you in telling the story of learning in your areas: how to gather and use learning evidence that communicates who is learning, what they are learning, and how successful learning happens when students work with you.
Please reach out to any CASL member or the Director of Assessment to talk about assessment strategies in your course or program of study. We’d love to hear from you.
