With the Covid-19 pandemic in all 50 states and the media reports and first-hand accounts of medical personnel without appropriate personal protective equipment, several members of our staff at Andrew Jackson Middle School in Cross Lanes, West Virginia, wanted to find a way to help. On March 28th, the WV MetroNews published a story where local colleges with 3D printers were responding to the WV National Guard's request for basic medical supplies. With a little research and help from the webpage of the Billings Clinic and Dr. Dusty Richardson, neurosurgeon, of Billings, Montana, our middle school began producing our first masks on Monday, March 30th. After a little trial and error with the 3D printer and print file, our first mask was completed at 11:00 PM. The first KnightMasks produced are being donated to Intensive Care nurses at St. Mary's Medical Center. The beauty of the KnightMask is that it is produced from PLA filament (thermoplastic polymer) which is relatively inexpensive and most importantly can be cleaned with soap and water, or other cleanser, to allow multiple uses by the medical professionals. The mask has two parts, a face shield, and filter holder, which holds a 2 1/2" square of medical grade fabric, which allows one N95, or surgical mask to be cut and made into 6 filters for the KnightMask. Please find pictures below of our mask production and additional information and resources regarding the 3D printed masks.

The KnightMask is a 3D printed mask created from specifications for production provided by the Billings Clinic to assist the public during the Covid-19 pandemic while there is a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). The mask is not intended to replace the N95 mask, or surgical masks, when those products are available. The mask has not been approved by federal, or state agencies, and we make no representations, or guarantees regarding safety, or effectiveness when used in any situation. The mask is provided to those in need who will use it at their own risk.
This mask is shown without the filter insert.
The 3D mask can be scaled to create a smaller mask to fit smaller sized faces.
