Classroom Demographics:
This unit is designed for students who attend a school composed of prominently African American and Hispanic students. This classroom is based on my likely student-teaching placement for the Winter 2023 semester. The challenges I face in teaching my students are unconscious bias and the privilege I have as a white male. Some of the challenges my students may face before they step foot in my classroom are lack of sleep, hunger, single-parent households, and taking care of siblings. In the greater school environment, writing has the role of letting others see what you have to say. In order to succeed during the unit, students will need to attend class, read the novel, give their opinions in discussions, and show me something they learned.
Rationale for this Unit:
The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to both Shakespeare and what a multi-genre project entails. I don't want to bore students too much by having them read what they may consider the writing of an old dead Englishman. That is why I feel this small step using a graphic novel to introduce Shakespeare is a necessary segment of my overall class. I will be promoting speaking, discussion, writing, and reading as relevant skills students will need to know in their future life arcs.
