I am available to give keynotes and other sessions related to alternative grading. Here are some things you should know if you're interested in having me speak to your group.
I primarily speak on alternative grading. Topics include a general introduction to alternative grading for those new to the topic, motivation and the need for change in grading, research that supports alternative grading methods, specific examples and models, and concrete next steps for those interested in getting started.
My sessions are accessible, relevant, and actionable. I am experienced speaking to faculty across disciplines, institutions, and positions. You can expect me to work with you to tailor my session to your group's needs. This will usually involve a 30 minute Zoom call plus follow-up emails.Â
Here's an example of a recent keynote presentation focused on concrete next steps for those already interested in alternative grading: What do I do after the keynote? Setting yourself up for success with grading for growth.
I offer several types of sessions:
Keynote: A 50-60 minute lecture, with 10-20 minutes for questions.
Ask Me Anything / Q&A session: A 30 or 60 minute unscripted session, often done online, in which a group can ask me any questions they like (preferably about alternative grading, but that's not required!) and I'll answer them. This is a great option for book clubs. It can also involve asking me to critique your group's plans for implementing alternative grading.
Workshop (1-6 hours): A highly adjustable workshop on alternative grading. Participants make concrete plans to use alternative grading in their own classes. Requires previous introduction to alternative grading, such as through a book club or keynote.
I may do other types of sessions as well (such as workshops); contact me to see what's possible.
These amounts are a general guide; please contact me to discuss your specific situation. The exact cost will depend on details such as the topic and amount of additional work required. These are best determined by talking with me directly!
In general, travel, lodging, and meals are extra beyond the amounts listed below and are paid by the host. I am very happy to do online sessions, in which case there are no other charges.
Keynote (1 hour): $1000-$2000 (depending on focus and amount of new background research required)
Ask Me Anything / Q&A: 1 hour: $300; 30 minutes: $200
Workshop: Depends on the length. Contact me with your situation and I can put together a quote.
I am always willing to talk with you about options.
I am probably one of the most Covid-cautious people you'll meet. I will wear a mask most times when I am indoors at your event, other than when I am actively speaking. I will generally unmask when actively speaking and eating. I do have a strong preference for outdoor meals if possible.
I'm experienced in making these restrictions work and they generally cause few if any difficulties for hosts. Of course, online sessions don't have any of these constraints. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Please send me an email to get things started!
