Speaking
I am available to give keynotes and other sessions related to alternative grading. Here are some things you should know if you're interested in having me speak to your group.
What I do
I primarily speak on alternative grading. Topics include a general introduction to alternative grading for those new to the topic, motivation and the need for change in grading, research that supports alternative grading methods, specific examples and models, and concrete next steps for those interested in getting started.
My sessions are accessible, relevant, and actionable. I am experienced speaking to faculty across disciplines, institutions, and positions. You can expect me to work with you to tailor my session to your group's needs. This will usually involve a 30 minute Zoom call plus follow-up emails.Â
Here's an example of a recent keynote presentation focused on concrete next steps for those already interested in alternative grading: What do I do after the keynote? Setting yourself up for success with grading for growth.
Format
I offer three main types of sessions:
Ask Me Anything / Q&A session: A 30 or 60 minute unscripted session, often done online, in which a group can ask me any questions they like (preferably about alternative grading, but that's not required!) and I'll answer them. This is a great option for book clubs. It can also involve asking me to critique your group's plans for implementing alternative grading.
Interactive reflective session: A 1 hour interactive session in which I guide participants in reflecting on topics related to grading, assessment, and related areas, and making plans to change and improve them. This is like a mini-workshop.
Keynote: A 50-60 minute lecture, with 10-20 minutes for questions.
I may do other types of sessions as well (such as workshops); contact me to see what's possible.
Cost
These amounts are a general guide; please contact me to discuss your specific situation. The exact cost will depend on details such as the topic and amount of additional work required. These are best determined by talking with me directly!
In general, travel, lodging, and meals are extra beyond the amounts listed below and are paid by the host. I am very happy to do online sessions, in which case there are no other charges.
Ask Me Anything / Q&A: 1 hour: $300; 30 minutes: $200
Interactive reflective session (1 hour): $500
Keynote (1 hour): $1000-$2000 (depending on focus and amount of new background research required)
I am always willing to talk with you about options.
Covid safety
I am probably one of the most Covid-cautious people you'll meet. I will wear a mask whenever I am indoors at your event. This has two practical consequences for face-to-face meetings:
I will wear a mask while presenting or facilitating all sessions. I prefer to use a microphone, lapel or otherwise, to make myself audible to everyone.
I will eat all meals outdoors (or in my own lodging). I do not eat indoors at restaurants. This is easy during the warmer months and can be a great chance for attendees to join me outside for informal conversation. I'm experienced making it work in colder seasons too. It is helpful, in any case, if meals are easy to carry (e.g. box lunches or a buffet where I can take a plate outside).
I'm experienced in making these restrictions work and they generally cause few if any difficulties for hosts. Of course, online sessions don't have any of these constraints. Please let me know if you have any questions.
