What to do the first few days and first few weeks with a new EL student at Green Local.
Who is responsible for each component checklist.
The most important thing to do:
Connecting with Students
Look for ways to build relationships with your El students.
Look for ways to welcome your students' languages and cultures.
Ensure that EL students are included in social and emotional learning.
Make sure students know what supports are available for them.
Strategies for Instruction
Increase El students' English language production and peer interaction.
Explicitly teach academic language vocabulary and structures.
Build on ELs' background knowledge to support comprehension.
Increase opportunities for writing.
Strategies for El Family Engagement
Start positive, strengths-based conversations with families.
Try a new tool to support family engagement. (ParentSquare)
Strategies for Collaboration & Advocacy
Look for ways to collaborate informally with colleagues.
Identify an area where you'd like to advocate for your Els.
Try identifying one issue that you think could make a difference if it were to improve or change. This might be an area of instruction, family engagement, language access, services and support, or creating a more welcoming environment at the school.
Help administrators develop their capacity to serve ELs.
Communicating with administrators about ELL instruction, support, and family engagement can make a big difference.
Strengthen your network of support.
Keep returning to self-care & reflection.
