Chemistry

Welcome to Chemistry!

Chemistry is studying the ‘stuff’ (matter) this world is made of. We will be learning to model what matter is, how it behaves, and how we can change it. Nearly everything we do in life is influenced by chemistry since our world (including YOU) is made of the ‘stuff’ chemists study. Our food, clothing, medicines, agriculture, health, transportation, arts – all make use of products and processes based on what chemists are learning about matter. In fact, the very act of breathing depends on chemistry!

This document contains expectations and policies each student will need to know to be successful in chemistry this year including:

  • late work policy,

  • makeup assignment deadlines,

  • academic integrity policy,

  • grading policies.

You may view or download a pdf of the syllabus by clicking on the title above.

Students and parents should familiarize themselves with these policies so we can work smoothly together this year.

This document contains an overview of the course content and approximate timing of each unit. NGSS standards are cited for each unit.

Under the current distance learning/hybrid conditions this year, the times for each unit may vary to accommodate needed modifications to the units and learning experiences. Maintaining quality learning experiences is my highest priority regarding my students.

You may view or download a pdf of the course overview by clicking on the title above.

The resources page contains some general resources (like a list of required class supplies, the lab report guide or a periodic table) that will be used throughout the course. Please feel free to review it online or download a copy if you no longer have your hard copy.

Any modification to resources students need for our distance learning/hybrid setting this year will be posted on Classroom Stream for each period.

The course textbook is World of Chemistry, Zumdahl/Zumdahl/DeCoste. It will be abbreviated "WoCh" in assignment references. Readings for each unit will be posted in the Unit Objective (document for each unit), Course Calendar (link above), and Classroom Stream site. These readings can be used to review, deepen understanding, or get an alternative presentation of the current concepts and ideas.
