I have been a Biology professor at California State University, Fresno since August 1997. I have served the University in many capacities but the one I am most proud of is serving a Chair of the Department of Biology. I teach Introductory Biology (Biology 1A) for majors, Cell Biology, Genetics, Developmental Biology, and Molecular Biology. I also teach GE courses on Science and Society. I have made it a personal crusade to improve student success in Biology 1A, a key Biology major’s course but also a GE course. I have taught Biology 1A eleven times since 2006 and I will be presenting my experiences trying to incorporate high-impact teaching strategies.

I received my Bachelors in Biology (major in Genetics) from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, my Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in Brussels, Belgium, and my PhD in Biology from Yale University. At Fresno State I have a research laboratory, with many MS and undergraduate students, where we study plant parasitic nematodes and ways to control them, as well as secondary metabolite production in algae.

My wife (Glenda W. Polack) and I have been married for 28 years and we live in Fresno, CA. We have a 27-year old son, Diego. I enjoy hiking, reading, listening to music, and red wine!
