Student-Centered Open Online Learning (SCOOL)
What is SCOOL?
Student-Centered Open Online Learning (SCOOL) is a web-based adaptive learning platform designed for Precalculus/College Algebra students and educators. SCOOL was designed by a team of Fresno State faculty, students, and staff to be used in Precalculus/College Algebra courses taught with Culturally Responsive Teaching pedagogy to make STEM more accessible.
Features
Adaptive content organized by learning outcomes:
Video lectures for each learning outcome.
Direct links to textbook pages and study guides.
List of suggested topics to follow based on knowledge map.
Students may begin their learning path by answering practice questions from any of three "entry point" learning outcomes (nodes).
Completion of certain learning outcomes unlocks learning outcomes and chapters that build upon previously completed learning outcomes.
Extensive question bank for formative and summative assessment.
Assessments developed by instructors based on learning outcomes.
Integration with Canvas.
SCOOL Knowledge Map and Learning Outcomes
The Fresno State On-Ramp to STEM project team designed a knowledge map of learning outcomes to encourage student mastery of prerequisite topics before proceeding to further sections. The project team curated and authored practice questions that appropriately test a student's knowledge of each learning outcome.
List of Learning Outcomes and Knowledge Map input/output nodes; For each row, completion of the learning outcome(s) in the first column automatically "unlocks" the learning outcome(s) listed in the second column. A blank cell means that no new learning outcome becomes unlocked by the completion of the prerequisite learning outcome (it is a terminal node). Green-filled cells indicate free "entry points" where these learning outcomes have no prerequisites. A comma "," indicates that the learning outcomes represent the same node in the knowledge map. A semicolon ";" indicates separate learning outcome nodes.
