Precalculus: I coordinate precalculus (Math 6) at Fresno State. I have been developing an active learning model. Before class, students watch videos, read the textbook, and take notes for class. In class, they take a quiz to verify they have prepared. In class, students work through problems and concepts, both individually and in groups on whiteboards around the room. We have discussions to help student grasp the deeper concepts; I am huge proponent of encouraging students to speak and share to help them develop their fluency in the language and concepts of mathematics. This extends to extensive use of word problems to train students to translate between mathematics and an application as well as help them adjust to slower and more methodical problem solving processes.
Co-requisite Course Development: In Summer of 2017, the California State University Chancellor's Office directed all CSU campuses to remove remediation and implement co-requisite support for underprepared students. I serve on the department committee to develop and oversee the implementation. My principal responsibility is the component of the course dedicated to general mathematics skills.
CVHEC Math Task Force: I serve as a co-chair of the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC) math task force. We are charged by the presidents and provosts to coordinate efforts between community colleges and CSU's in the central valley to rapidly implement co-requisite reforms dictated by the California Assembly and CSU Chancellor's office, respectively.
