I am in the Electrical and Computer Engineering discipline which is part of STEM. It is known that the material covered in Engineering could be challenging and a lot of time intimidating to many incoming freshman students that start our program in our department. I have been trying to connect with my students early on from the first day of classes. I have to mention that it has not been a fun experience for my students as I was initially very demanding and wanted my students to do the homework, exams, and exams in a timely manner and do well in them. Not thinking that the culture at Fresno State is totally, different from where I came from. Here we have first-generation students, who might need to work several jobs in addition to going to school and might even have families. Therefore, there was a strong urgency to change the way I was delivering my lecture either in person or online.
After taking this class, I learned a lot and acquired sufficient useful knowledge to better connect with my students in the classroom. The Liquid Syllabus was an eye-opener as my syllabus before was a dry 10 pages of text and I used to ask my students to read before class, many of them did not read and I totally now understand why. The workshop has helped me to be able to create more meaningful short lectures that are focused on particular points in the course or they could be a short video on exam preparation. The video editing tools as well as the Adobe Express slide shows with music and video or pictures are also very useful for my future teaching online as well as in-person classes that I plan to adopt. Above all the concept of humanizing a classroom is of such importance that I plan to incorporate many things that we learned in this causes in my future classes.
I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to take this workshop and learn from experience professors on best practices and methodologies on how to humanize our classrooms. I am going to use many of the concepts that I have learned in this amazing workshop in my future classes including but not limited to creating a Liquid Syllabus, having a video welcoming message, having more one in one interaction with my students, replying to them with videos instead of a dry email or Canvas message, breaking down the lectures onto smaller more digestible videos as sometimes it is hard to grams those hard engineering concepts in a lecture that is over one hour long. Overall I am glad that I took this workshop as it was very informative and beneficial for my future instructional delivery of more humanized lectures.
