FAQ's in ASL
What is ASL Club?
ASL stands for American Sign Language. ASL is it's own language that is used commonly with people who are Deaf. They are proud to be Deaf and use ASL to communicate. Here at our club, we try to spotlight this supportive, welcoming, and beautiful community by using ASL, interacting with the community, and hold events with the community
Why should I become an ASL Club member?
ASL Club is more than just a club: it is a community. We try to replicate the closeness, friendliness, and support you would recieve in the Deaf community. Along with this community, you will be exposed to ASL. We will inform you about ASL Club events, which ASL will be used. The number one reccomendation to learn ASL, or any language for that matter, is to be exposed constantly. Attending the events are free but there is an added bonus to becoming a member. Members will gain access to more benefits. This will include study groups, free entry to some events, and so much more!
What if I don't know ASL, can I still join?
Of course! This is a very supportive community. We have members with no prior knowledge of ASL or the community, to Deaf people participating at these events. Everyone understands and will help make your signing better and try to communicate with you.
Can I still go to events without being a member?
We do not want to force people to join our club. We want people to love the community as much as we do! Events, for example coffee socials, are open to the public. The best way to learn any language is to be immersed in it, and coffee socials are the way to be immersed in the language.
If I can't join or go to events, what can I do?
We understand that not everyone can go to events. We recommend taking the CSDS 139 class. This is the do's and don'ts when interacting with the community. With this beautiful community growing, no matter what field you specialize in, you will interact with a person who is Deaf. This class will ensure that there is no miscommunication and make the Deaf person feel welcome, safe, and heard.
