CONNECTION CLASSES AT RISING STARR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Art

If you don’t think of yourself as artistic, you can learn with this class. You get to work with clay, learn how to paint, and develop methods to improve your drawing ability. Creativity is highly encouraged in this class!

Broadcasting

Home of the daily RSMS Panther News! Studios A and B are used by students to produce content for the show. Studio B is available for all students to create videos. Our morning broadcast is shown during homeroom and is also on YouTube. 6th grade students can audition for our broadcast team in January.

Computer

This is a class designed to make you a better typist and let you learn more about computers. You’ll learn about safety on the internet, designing web-pages, all types of computer programs including Photoshop, and sometimes you get to play games.

Family and Consumer Science

Family and consumer science is a class to learn about nutrition and diet, cooking, and sewing. You may get this class more than once when you are at Rising Starr, but you’ll learn different things each year.

Health/Fitness

This class is just what it sounds like, HEALTH and FITNESS. One day you dress out and go to the fitness room where you use weights, bikes, and other equipment to get into shape; you also spend time in the health class where you learn more about your body and how to keep it healthy.

Music Technology

Music Technology is a 9-week course where you learn how to make your own music using a Digital Audio Workstation like GarageBand or SoundTrap. Students learn the basics of music, and use technology to complete a range of projects from making your own ringtone, to writing your own song, to creating music for a movie! Some students even share their completed projects through the school's record label, Hall Pass Entertainment.

Technology

This class is very exciting. When you get this connection you get to choose from different Technology Modules you can do. You can learn to build robots, launch rockets, fly planes and drones, make movies or radio shows, learn about 3D printing, game design and more. This class is very fun, but you still have to work hard to learn the technology and to be an engineer.

Band

Band is lots of fun. Almost every adult will tell you, “they wish they had learned to play an instrument when they were a child.” This is your shot to never be that adult. They hold amazing concerts. You do not need to know how to play an instrument before signing up for band, or even know what instrument you would like to play. Band is a full year commitment due to the amount of information you have to learn. Mr. Respress is the Band Director.

Chorus

Chorus is a lot of fun if you like to sing - no audition or singing by yourself required - just sign up! Chorus is a full-year commitment and meets every day as one of your connections classes. In chorus, they sing all kinds of classical music AND some pop and rock music. “Rock Fridays” allow you to also learn some basics on Piano, Ukulele and Guitar. Ms. Krider is the chorus director.

Orchestra

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to play the violin or other stringed instruments, this is a class you would enjoy. Like band and chorus, it takes the place of one of your connections. You don’t have to have any experience coming into this class, so if you want to try it, tell your parents to sign you up. Orchestra is a full year commitment. Mr. Kufchak is the Orchestra Director.

PE (Gym)

In PE, you get to play several different sports during the 9 weeks. These sports range from flag football to basketball to bowling, etc. You have to bring your own clothes everyday (or week) to change into for your sports. You have to dress out every day to receive a good grade.

P.A.

PA stands for Project Adventure. It is a class where you learn to work together as a team to get a task accomplished. The PA course could be on an obstacle on the ground or it could be high in the air. You have the opportunity to walk across a tightrope 30 feet in the air, climb a giant hanging ladder, or go down a huge zip line! You are still required to dress out every day to receive a good grade except for high element days.

Math Support

Math Support is here to help you develop your skills as a math learner and to improve in your academic mathematics class. Emphasis is placed on the learning process, as well as previewing items you will see in the classroom. This allows you to enter the classroom with the background knowledge needed to succeed.
