Growing up, I have always had an interest in clothing as a way of self-expression. People say to “dress for what you aspire to be” as an encouragement to manifest your future. Clothing is the exterior layer that people often base assumptions on when meeting others for the first time. Whether you like it or not, what you wear does speak for you.
In 2022, I ran a consignment clothing business reselling thrift shop finds on Instagram @gmbclothingshop to friends and peers. From this experience, my social media feed became consumed by sustainable fashion and filled with the community of consignment shoppers on Instagram. Thrifting or hunting for clothing at second-hand stores has become trendy and much more popular in the last five years. The world of reselling sneakers and clothing has become especially successful during this time.
With a background in clothing retail, I took a Fashion Marketing course at the Florence University of the Arts during my semester abroad. This class explored how luxury fashion houses and small designers utilize media for branding and advertising. My senior thesis was motivated by my interest and questions about how marketers position sustainable goods, specifically clothing.
After the initial research stages, the project evolved from the ethics and labor laws within the fashion industry into an environmental study. Throughout this capstone project, reading existing research has opened my eyes to the strain the clothing industry has put on our planet’s resources and environment. This study hopes to capture the buying intentions of Generation Z to improve marketing for sustainable fashion initiatives.
