This website presents an original research project focused on the media coverage of sports journalists and athletes. The content of this site is informed by scholarly literature on this topic.
This literature review goes in-depth about women and the lack of representation they have in the sports industry. Discussing important topics that include the historical breakdown and looking at specific laws like Title IX to see the impact that has helped females in the sports industry. The importance of television and social media and how influential they can be for athletes and sports journalists. The problems females still have involved sexist comments as well as racial obstacles. lastly, these struggles for females in the sports industry aren't just in America, countries like China, Australia, and Poland also receive backlash from the male dominance in sports.
The primary research investigates the type of media coverage female sports journalists have compared to male sports journalists. 20 sports journalists’ were chosen to have their Instagram pages looked at, going back to the years 2018 to 2021. Collecting 10 posts by each journalist totaling that to 200 posts were looked at to see what kind of context each journalist published. By using content analysis coding, each post has several questions in relation to that specific post. Using a second coder to calculate 10% of the data representing the reliability of this research. Results included that male sports journalists posted more about sport-related content more than female sports journalists. Overall, both male and female sports journalists posted more about their personal life rather than their profession, but females posted a lot more to their feeds in general than the males did. Limitations included that some of the original journalists chosen in the beginning became private or didn’t have enough photos to choose from. This site outlines the study's methodology, key findings, and limitations and offers an application-based component detailing women’s change in sports journalism to this day.
