Ahoy Mates!
My name is Maili Nielsen and I am a non-traditional student looking to explore a world I have always been interested in, the ocean. That is why I joined the Marine Technology program to learn more about the marine environment and what jobs are available in the field. The ocean and the life that lives in it are very new to me and it has been a wonderful experience learning all about it!
I grew up in Colorado exploring the mountains. My hobbies included hiking, rock climbing, ultimate frisbee, and snowboarding. But now I look forward to learning new hobbies such as surfing, scuba diving, and paddle boarding. One of my most favorite pastimes when I can't be outside is exploring what I can make out of LEGOs. The world has so much to offer and I can’t wait to learn more about it.
My name is Micah Barton and this is my third semester in the Marine Technology program. I am a North Carolina native but have explored and stayed in 47 different states (I'm coming for you next, Michigan!). I'm in this program to carve a path and career for myself in this spectacular industry. I’m interested in hydrographic survey, ecological monitoring, and aquaculture, though I have yet to find a discipline in this industry that I’m not excited about. This program has been everything I've looked for and more, and I am always excited to meet people who are as passionate about it as I am. I have a fine arts degree from another NC community college, and I find that the ocean has been the best artistic muse in all of Creation. I look forward to seeing you out there, sailors!
“Blue” Takagi is a “military brat” who spent much of their childhood overseas, traveling throughout Asia while living in Okinawa and Indonesia. They moved here from San Diego to pursue their goal of working on a research vessel. When not studying, or in class, Blue can be found fishing, or fiddling with their aquariums.
Hey there! My name is Gracie and I’m the marine tech Treasurer for the spring semester of 2025!
I am a North Carolina native who grew up on Oak Island. When I was a kid I would spend as much time as I could on the beach and was always trying to learn more about the ocean and the animals that inhabit it.
The Marine Technology program has given me the perfect opportunity to pursue my passion and begin a career and life out at sea!
Hi. I am Shane White. I am one of the newest members of the executive board as a SGA member. I am a freshman and I hope to continue to be within and active in the Club all throughout college.
I am an avid fisherman and outdoorsman that will try everything and anything given the opportunity. I was born and raised in Huntersville, North Carolina and have been living in Leland for 6 years. I hope to work on a marine research vessel when I graduate. I am also a very outgoing person and I hope to get to meet everyone in Marine Tech.
See you out on the water!
