Ying Liu, Ph.D

About Me

My name is Ying Liu and I am a biology department faculty member. I mainly teach microbiology, genetics and human biology to students who are interested in getting into healthcare careers and students who are taking science courses for GE transfer.

Biology is such a fascinating field that encompasses such diverse topics. I love teaching microbiology because there are microorganisms in our bodies and all around us in the environment. Even though most people associate bacteria as disease pathogens; there are a lot more "good" microbes than "bad" ones since < 1% of microbes are pathogens. I love teaching genetics because students are often curious about how genetic inheritance and evolution works. With modern biotechnology, companies such as "23 & me" or "Ancestry" can sequence your genome and give you more information about your heritage than your parents or grandparents ever did. With human biology, students not only learn about the organ systems of the human body, but also about ecology and environmental issues such as climate change.

Regardless of what your academic goals are at CCSF, taking a biology course will make you more aware of some of the global issues we are facing and appreciate the beautiful natural world that we are living in.
