BSEN 74 , Section 001

business communication

[was face-to-face, now remote]

Course description

This class focuses on:

  • Extensive practice in writing and editing business letters, e-mail messages, memorandums and other business documents.

  • Class discussions on style, structure, goals of written business communication, and cultural diversity in business.

  • Practice in using appropriate English in business documents.

This college-level course requires reading, study, and writing. All class assignments and materials are available through Canvas (CCSF’s online course delivery system). Class assignments are also submitted through Canvas. The textbooks used are online textbooks, available for free to students. No textbook purchase is required.

In Spring 2022, I will be teaching two sections of this course. This page is about

  • Wednesdays, 6:10-8:30 Zoom session, CRN 32890, Section 001

The other section is part of a specialized cohort training program and is not available to students outside the CityBuild program.

Since this class is being taught online through distance learning for Spring 2022, students are expected to attend a weekly class session via CityZoom during the scheduled class time. Other assignments and class discussions will be done online. The class is NOT self-paced, there are assignments that are due every week.

Required Materials

I use OER (Open Educational Resources) for BSEN 74, so there is nothing you need to buy. The textbooks are all online and free to access. These are the ones that I use most, although I do pull in other resources:

You will need convenient access to a computer with Internet, and the ability to use Zoom. Although you may be able to access parts of the class with a smartphone, you really need a laptop or desktop computer to fully access all the assignments and interactive elements of the class. If you don't have access to a computer, contact me and I'll connect you with CCSF's Chromebook loan program.

Drop Policy and the need to participate

Students must maintain consistent participation in the class to finish required assignments and pass the class. Students who wish to drop the course should do so through MyRam and not rely on the instructor to drop them.

No-Show

A “no-show” is an enrolled student for whom there is no evidence of participation. Any student who does not participate in our online class Zoom by the second session will be dropped unless they have previously contacted the instructor. Any student who has not submitted the first week's assignments by the second week of class will be considered a no-show and dropped from the class. Please plan to review the course in Canvas on the first day of the semester to get a feel for the pace and demands of the class. If you want to stay enrolled in the class and you are unable to access Canvas, email the instructor at rpugh@ccsf.edu with your name, the course (BSEN 74 Section 001), whether you have called the Canvas helpdesk and the date that you plan to access Canvas.

FW grade

A student that enrolls and submits initial assignments but doesn’t engage consistently throughout the course will receive an “FW.” Students who do not turn in any assignments for one or more modules do not meet the requirement for consistent participation and will receive an FW. Students who have missing assignments in two or more modules may be deemed to lack consistent participation and may also receive an FW.
