If you have already visited France, you will have noticed that there are reminders of the past everywhere! The French live everyday with reminders of the Roman Empire, Renaissance castles, Gothic cathedrals. History and past culture is a visible part of everyday life. This course is an overview of French culture and civilization from the earliest inhabitants of the geographical location known today as France to just before the start of WWI. Because our topic is so vast, we will only touch on some of the many possible topics of study. There will be opportunities to do more in-depth research on topics of your choice.
We'll focus on ancient Celtic tribes, Roman invaders, the crusades, Medieval and Renaissance literature, the role of religion, the influence of France in the Americas, the Revolution of 1789, and much more. You will be able to experience plays by great French playwrights of the 17th century, learn about the 18th century thinkers who helped form the views of the founding fathers of our country, view films showing the interpretation of historic events in France seen from the present day, and consider the evolution of music and art over many time periods. We will examine the influence of the past and its cultural artifacts on France today. See the Course Outline for French 41.
