An introduction to the Autodesk AutoCAD software, starting with a basic understanding of the software interface and moving to two dimensional line drawings for an architectural application. Explore collaborative drawing with externally referenced files and management using a layering system.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Create architectural drawings employing the standards and conventions of architectural graphic representations using AutoCAD.
Analyze an AutoCAD layering system and apply it to differentiate various drawing or model elements.
Synthesize separate AutoCAD drawings and models using external references in the coordination and collaboration of drawings.
Explain best practices in using AutoCAD for collaborative projects.
ARCH 214 Course Outline of Record
This class is offered fully online as part of CityOnline and is 17.5 weeks.
This course will be offered in the spring 2025 semester. Please check the current CCSF class schedule page to see when this class is next offered.
This online course is formatted asynchronously. There will be weekly assignments with biweekly assignment submissions required by Thursdays and Sundays. Weekly Zoom meetings will be held through CityZoom on Thursdays 12-1pm with the opportunity for students to ask questions and get real-time support. Live attendance at class Zoom meetings is highly encouraged (but optional).
Students are required to attend a live orientation meeting over Zoom during the first week of class on
January 16 (Thursday) from 12:00-1:00pm
The midterm and final exams will be administered through Canvas and must be completed during the following date ranges:
Midterm Exam - March 10 - March 16
Final Exam - May 12 - May 19
Visit the CCSF Registration page for information on how to register for classes.
Before the first day of instruction: If enrollment is full then you can elect to be added to a waitlist. If space opens up in the course (i.e. if an enrolled student drops) then waitlisted students are given an opportunity to enroll in the course with a notification to their @mail.ccsf.edu email address. This opportunity is only open for 24 hours and if you don't act on it, you are removed from the waitlist and the next student is given the opportunity.
After the first day of instruction: I will authorize adding students if there is capacity only on the first day of instruction (i.e. if an enrolled student drops the course). I will not add students after the first day of instruction. If you are interested in enrolling in the class you must Submit a Class Add Request in your RAMID Portal. I will authorize add requests based on waitlist priority. Note that if your Add Request is authorized, you will receive a notification email and have only 24 hours to officially enroll in the class through your myRAM portal.
After the first week of the semester, no shows (students who have not attended nor submitted any assignments) will be dropped from the course.
Students must have completed at least one of the following prerequisites: ARCH 20 or ARCH 101 or ARCH 218 or BIM 120 or INTD 100 or INTD 102
If you have not yet completed any of the possible prerequisites at CCSF and intend on taking ARCH 214, contact the instructor for more information. In order to successfully begin this course, students should already be familiar with two dimensional and three dimensional architectural drawing types, be able to read orthographic drawings and understand architectural drawing terminology such as line weight, dimensioning, architectural scale, and depth cues. Familiarity with a PC computer with a Windows XP operating system or a Macintosh with Mac OS is necessary, as this course is not designed to go into depth explaining these systems.
To complete assignments in AutoCAD students must have access to a PC or Mac computer with a keyboard, external 3-button scroll mouse, and internet connection such as a laptop or desktop. Instructor demonstrations are given on a Windows PC; Mac users will need to complete some additional study. AutoCAD software is not available for Chromebooks or tablets (such as iPads). Wifi hotspots are available to check out from the CCSF library.
The CCSF library also lends laptops but AutoCAD cannot be installed on them so they cannot be used for this class. If you have concerns about accessing a computer to take this class, let your instructor know immediately; there are limited alternative resources available on a case by case basis.
Select assignments and reading will come directly from the required textbook, available at the CCSF bookstore.

or
Digital Drawing for Designers: A Visual Guide to AutoCAD 2017

There is minimal difference between these two textbook editions. Either is sufficient.
There are limited copies of the 2021 version and 2017 version of the textbook available to check out on reserve through the CCSF library.
