English 1A

Course Information

English 1A + 1AS is a course designed to build your skills as a critical thinker, reader and writer. Coursework will include reading college-level texts and essays, using the classroom as a forum of discussion for your responses to the readings, and of course, writing. Writing is the medium we use to give shape to our meaning and express our ideas. In this class we will continue to work with, and improve upon, your current writing skills by completing a variety of writing assignments.

Our main focus in this class will be uncovering the myths and realities of American society and cultural constructs. Some of the ideas covered will be: The American Dream, the Ideal Nuclear Family, Gender and Race, and Education. Within these topics we will explore the mythology surrounding these concepts to find the reality, current inequities and sometimes, possible solutions to the more negative realities of our times.

My goal is to help you find your interest, and in this class we will do a lot of critical reading, thinking and discussion to help you find ideas you are excited to write about!
