Math Around the World

During the 2019-2020 academic year, I took a travel sabbatical and worked on a project called Math Around the World. During my trip, I visited 30 countries as well as Antarctica, and I documented interesting instances of math that I encountered. Some of these were practical uses of math, while others were just interesting observations. My goals were to bring attention to interesting mathematical concepts and to find a way to share my travel experiences with my students and colleagues.

My hope is to continue to travel during the school holidays and add to this project. I have had so many wonderful experiences in different countries, and I want to share them so that I can build connections with people from different backgrounds. My goal is to visit every country in the world, so that I can connect with students from all backgrounds.

You can see a map of the trip below. Though it was cut short due to COVID-19, I was still able to travel for nine months, covering over 70,000 miles by land, air, and sea. One of the most adventurous parts of the trip was a 33-day expedition to Antarctica (which turned into a 40-day expedition due to the pandemic), during which I learned a lot about naval navigation, the history of polar exploration, Antarctic weather, penguin populations, climate change, and more. I am excited to share all of this, and I hope that it piques your interest in Antarctica, travel in general, and of course mathematics.
