Thank you for your interest in taking Health 53: Personal and Community Health. I have taught this course the past several semesters at CCSF Ocean Campus (both in-person and online). As your professor, I look forward in sharing my professional work experiences as a Public Health Practitioner for the City of Berkeley Public Health Department and as a social scientist researching social determinants of health and educational attainment. My personal goal is to provide you with both a conceptual and practical understanding of the factors and systems that contribute to personal and community well-being, whether your goals are to pursue advance degrees in higher education or simply for your own personal interests. Either way, you will practice applying and analyzing psycho social health factors impacting both people and community.
This online course is designed to help you learn factors that impact "personal and community health" by reading the assigned textbook materials and accessing online resources. In addition, Learner's will be able to share and learn from each other's personal and community health experiences through facilitated online discussions and group activities. In order to be successful in this course, you will need to spend approximately 6-8 plus hours of reading, completing assignments and interacting with other learners per week for the 16-week course OR 25-30 hours/week for the 6-week shorter faster paced version of this course. If this is your first time taking an online course, I highly recommend you view the introduction to Online Learning video .
