Intensive study of kanji characters to increase competence in reading and writing Japanese and in understanding authentic materials such as restaurant menus, text messages, hotel websites and others.

Student Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
Describe the meaning of 180 single characters belonging to the four types of kanji and apply that knowledge to the meaning of compound characters.
Distinguish either on-yomi (Chinese origin reading) or kun-yomi (Japanese origin reading) based on the context and compounds.
Identify the components of kanji: basc radicals (meaning elements of kanji) and phonetic elements of kanji.
Compose paragraphs using kanji characters which follow stroke order rules.
