Kendra Lockman
Mathematics Instructor
City College of San Francisco
I've been teaching math at CCSF since 2010. I strongly believe that every student has the ability to learn math at the highest levels, and I also respect that each student comes in with individual backgrounds, interests, and time commitments that may affect how committed they are to learning math. I am committed to helping each student reach an understanding of math that matches their priorities.
Math is a beautiful subject. Many students have been taught to treat it as a list of equations and techniques to memorize, which has a tendency to make the subject boring and intimidating. The more you can dig into the why of different mathematical relationships, it'll become more interesting and, conveniently, will also require a lot less memorization.
I have a B.A. and an M.A. in math from the University of Montana in Missoula (1998 and 2000). I also attended UC Berkeley (2000-2005, no degree), and I worked for 4 years at a Bay Area math textbook publishing company, both as an editor and as a projects coordinator for a certain math education software. The most important skill that I've learned in my years of teaching is how to listen to students.
