Class begins on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 and meets every Wednesday of the semester from 4:10 to 6:10pm.

Because we're still in pandemic remote mode, all of our meetings will take place online in CityZoom (accessible from within the Canvas course).


Course Description

Purpose

    • Provide an overview of law and professional ethics for Certified Addictions Treatment Counselors.

Goal

    • Examine your moral code and strengthen your analytic skills in reference to ethical dilemmas that commonly arise for treatment counselors in the field (including a variety of certifications and licenses, and tailored to Registered Alcohol and Drug Technicians (RADT) and Certified Addictions Treatment Counselors (CATC) certifications)

How will we get there?

    • Reviewing information about codes of ethics in drug treatment work and the laws that govern its practice in California and the United States

    • Sharing care scenarios, personal experiences, media stories, and other forms of arts and media

    • Exploring the therapeutic, clinical, and practical considerations involved in the legal and ethical practice of Certified Addictions Treatment Counselors

What’s the framework?

    • Curiosity and critical scrutiny: Developing and integrating increasingly sophisticated ways of thinking about moral, psychological, multicultural, and legal standards

    • Emphasizing cultural humility and justice

    • Ecology: Going beyond the individual person to the setting (family, community, society, and beyond), including larger systems of privilege and power, including socioeconomic class, race, gender, and sexual/affectional orientation. Examining the ecological effects of these on ethical decision-making processes
