SOC 55 Introduction to Cannabis Studies

Course overview

This course provides an introduction to the sociological examination of cannabis as a social phenomenon. During the semester students will conduct a historical and intersectional analysis of the sociological study of cannabis and examine topics like social and cultural identity, regulation and enforcement, criminalization, and movements toward legalization. The topics of this course will be looked at through the perspective of social power and inequity--asking questions like, who has power? Who creates and shapes discourse, meaning, and legislation? Who benefits/ profits, and who gets left behind?--to uncover the processes that have led to the current cannabis landscape.

Syllabus

This course will be available Spring 2021. Check back in the coming weeks for the syllabus.

succeeding in an online classroom

If you have never taken an online class, it is a good idea to check out some of these tips for success!

Taking an online class is a big commitment! It is not self-paced; there are multiple due dates each week, and the average time spent per week on each unit is the same, if not more than a traditional classroom. This means you will need to set aside time each week to read and complete the required assignments.

You can also take this short quiz to see if online learning is right for you.
