Course Cost Transparency in the California Community Colleges – The Past, The Present, and the Future
In 2010, a federal requirement that the costs of “college textbooks and supplemental materials” be made available to students at the time of registration took effect. This requirement was followed by regulatory changes that permitted California community colleges (CCCs) to require students to purchase access to electronic resources and then by a new state law that required the marking of course sections with no textbook costs. In 2024, our colleges are grappling with implementing a section-level data element (XB12) that captures course cost data, a new cost transparency law that takes effect on January 1, 2025, and a proposed new regulation that pushes colleges to ensure students have the instructional materials they need to fully participate on the 1st day of class. In this webinar, we will explore the history and interaction of these various requirements. Are there inconsistencies or contradictions? Or are the CCCs demonstrating how to truly make college affordable?

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA) Framework Summer Pilot Program – An Overview and Update of the IDEA Assessment Process
This summer the Open Educational Resources Initiative (OERI) hosted an IDEA Summer Pilot Program. Twelve faculty members, in multiple disciplines from colleges across the state, participated in a 4-week IDEA assessment training. The purpose of the training was to teach faculty how to apply the IDEA Framework to existing Open Educational Resources (OER). In addition, the participants offered feedback to develop an IDEA Framework assessment process whereby OER can be submitted to the OERI for review. Join us in this webinar to find out what we learned from the summer pilot and to share your suggestions for creating an IDEA Framework Assessment process.

What could you, or what would you, do if you could train an AI to support your students? At the OERI’s Friday Forum on September 6, presenters shared examples of how teaching and learning can be supported when leveraging the power of AI and OER. One of the examples involved using PlayLab to create bots that students can interact with to ask questions about the syllabus and course resources. To learn more, access Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Open Educational Resources (OER) to Support Student Learning. Read on for information about participating the PlayLab AI Professional Learning Community.
The PlayLab AI Professional Learning Community (PLC) is collaboration between PlayLab AI, the Berkeley School of Education, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. This initiative is aimed at empowering higher education educators and staff across the state to create impactful, AI-powered learning experiences for students.
The Initiative is seeking California community college educators and staff who are excited to engage with PlayLab, an AI-powered platform that allows users to create custom bots to support learning, teaching, and administrative tasks. The platform empowers educators to become creators of AI tools, not just consumers, and it helps build AI-driven solutions tailored to student needs.
As part of this partnership, a 3-week Professional Learning Community (PLC) is being formed that will engage in the following:
· Onboarding and training educators and staff to use PlayLab.
· Providing participants with the skills to run their own workshops and onboard other users into the platform.
Please complete the form below to express interest and be contacted with more details about scheduling and participation.
Access the PlayLab AI Professional Learning Community (PLC) Interest Form: Higher Education Partnership to express your interest in this opportunity.
