COURSE DESCRIPTION

In ESL 75  we will focus on academic writing, editing, and proofreading skills and strategies, with a number of individual and collaborative assignments to support your mastery. 

As a fully online class, we will practice writing clear, coherent paragraphs every week. 

There will also be vocabulary and grammar activities and quizzes to support your mastery of the English language and you will keep a Learning Reflection Journal.

There is no textbook for this course. All materials will be accessed on-line. At the end of the 6-week course, you will design a digital portfolio as a final project to demonstrate mastery of everything you have learned.

COURSE GOALS

At the completion of this course students will:

Compose a variety of basic and complex sentences with a range of grammatical structures following standard academic writing conventions at an intermediate ESL level.

Apply editing/proofreading skills and strategies to locate and correct errors in intermediate ESL for pre-college writing

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS

There are no required books for this course.  All materials will be provided in Canvas.

REQUIRED HARDWARE

Computer/laptop or smartphone

Ideally, you should have access to a laptop or desktop computer to complete this course. However, I have taken care to design a course that can also be completed from a smartphone. If you intend to complete this course on a phone, please let me know and inform me if there are any problems that arise. Your feedback will help me improve our learning environment to support more students.

Recording Equipment

You will record voice or video comments in this course on various platforms. To do this, you will need either a microphone or webcam connected to your computer or you may record using a smartphone.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE

You will use Canvas, which is accessed through your MyCCSF account for this course. You won't need to create and account or download anything unless you are using a phone as your course access method.

Canvas Student App (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

I strongly recommend that you download the free Canvas Student App before course starts you can stay more connected with our course. When prompted to find your school, enter CCSF and then select our ESL 75 course from your Dashboard.

Other Mobile Apps (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

Throughout the course I will introduce other tools to support your learning, such as Flipgrid, Padlet, JamBoard, Google Slides, and Adobe Spark Pages. You will be able to access these apps directly from our Canvas course. I'll tell you more before we use them and I will provide plenty of support so that you will be successful using these tools.

IMPORTANT DATES

Monday August 28, 2023:  The first day of our online class

Monday September 4: Labor Day

Tuesday October 9th: Indigenous Peoples' Day

Friday November 10th: Veterans' Day

Thursday November 23rd to Sunday November 26th: Thanskgiving Holiday

Tuesday December 19: Last Day of our class. ESL 75 locks at 11:30pm.
