COURSE DESCRIPTION


  • In ESL 122 we will practice pre-academic listening and speaking skills and strategies. We will collaborate on oral communication activities and oral presentations with low-intermediate level vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • As an online class, we will meet twice every week for Livestream sessions.

  • You will be making individual and group presentations and various assignments during our Livestream sessions.

  • The textbook for this course is "North Star 2" 5th edition by Laurie Frazier (ISBN: 978-0-13-522696-4).

  • You will use the book for homework assignments and preparation for your presentations.

  • At the end of the 18-week course, you will make a final presentation and design a digital portfolio to demonstrate mastery of everything you have learned.

COURSE GOALS

In this course you will:

  • Identify and recall main ideas and important details when listening to spoken English.

  • Produce comprehensible spoken language in academic discussions and presentations on topics.

  • Use academic learning strategies for the development of listening and speaking skills.



REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS



The required textbook for this course is "Speech Communication Made Simple 2" 4th edition

Authors: Dale and Wolf (ISBN: 978-0-13-286169-4. Cambridge Univ. Press

Other course materials will be provided in Canvas.

REQUIRED HARDWARE


Computer/laptop or smartphone

Ideally, you should have access to a laptop or desktop computer to complete this course. However, I have taken care to design a course that can also be completed from a smartphone. If you intend to complete this course on a phone, please let me know and inform me if there are any problems that arise. Your feedback will help me improve our learning environment to support more students.

Recording Equipment

You will record videos for this course on various platforms. To do this, you will need either a microphone or webcam connected to your computer or you may record using a smartphone.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE

You will use Canvas, which is accessed through your MyCCSF account for this course. You won't need to create and account or download anything unless you are using a phone as your course access method.

Canvas Student App (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

I strongly recommend that you download the free Canvas Student App before course starts you can stay more connected with our course. When prompted to find your school, enter CCSF and then select our ESL 122 course from your Dashboard.

Other Mobile Apps (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

Throughout the course I will introduce other tools to support your learning, such as Flipgrid, Padlet, JamBoard, Google Slides, and Adobe Spark Pages. You will be able to access these apps directly from our Canvas course. I'll tell you more before we use them and I will provide plenty of support so that you will be successful using these tools.

Monday August 16, 2021: Our first ESL 122 Class

Monday September 6: Labor Day Holiday

Monday October 11: Indigenous People's Day Holiday

Thursday November 11: Veteran's Day

Thursday to Sunday November 25 to 28: Thanksgiving Break

Wednesday December 15th: Last Day of the Fall 2021 semester. The course will be locked after this date.
