I teach in multiple departments. ESL is my home department. I teach English as Second Language (ESL) at the Chinatown Center. These are face-to-face classes and non-credit ESL classes.

An interdisciplinary survey of Muslim identity and the origins, principles, and practices of Islam, comparing and contrasting them with those of other major religions. Focus on the historical development and current practices of Islam and its impact on philosophy, art, music, architecture, gender, media, popular culture, and politics.

Islamic Art and Architecture

I teach Islamic art and architecture section of the course. This portion of the course surveys artifacts of early Islamic states and to explore the ways in which these are used to understand the societies that produced them. Religious and secular architecture, ceramics, metalwork, calligraphy, and textiles will be examined to reveal their economic, social, cultural, and ideological context. We will consider changes and the continuities in Islamic religious architecture and the influence of Islamic design on U.S. architecture.
