Astronomy is the study of literally all things in the universe. Planets-- the special topic of this course-- are just one narrowly defined class of objects. While large by human standards, planets are profoundly small in the cosmic scheme of things.
The Summer 2021 course will be delivered purely online, with no synchronous class meetings.
The Fall 2021 course is tentatively set to have Midterm and Final exams administered in person, contingent on a partial reopening of CCSF's main campus. Please do not enroll in the Fall 2021 course if you cannot attend in-person meeting in mid-October and mid-December.
The Summer 2021 ASTR-17 course begins Monday, June 7 and ends Sunday, August 1.
The Fall 2021 ASTR-17 course begins Monday, Aug. 30 and ends Friday, Dec. 17.
I am not currently teaching any sections of ASTR-17, and (as you can see from dates listed above) this has been the case for a rather long time now. I will update this page if that changes.
Update: It just changed! I had an online section switch to online ASTR-17 at the last moment, so now I'm teaching online ASTR-17 in the Spring 2025 semester! The class is a 16-week late-start compressed version, beginning Monday, Jan. 27th.
This surprise change leaves me little time to make any major changes to the online course as it currently exists. A new edition of the textbook may be available, but I will have to check this. If there is a 10th edition of the textbook listed below, I will decide later this month if I want to adopt it. (Sticking with an older version might help to reduce the cost to students.)
(Cosmic Perspective -or- Cosmic Perspective: Solar System), 9th edition. Bennett, Donahue, Schneider & Voit
If there is a wait list, I will drop no-show and inactive students after seven days and I will give their places in the class to wait listed students. Please contact me in advance if you know you will be starting late. If I drop you because of inactivity, and you wish to be reinstated into the class, please contact me immediately and I very likely will be able to get you back in.
If the class already has started and you want to add it late, look for a "Class Add Request" option in the course registration window. A request submitted this way will place you on a Class Authorization wait list. If space becomes available and I approve your request, you will receive an automated email notification that your request has been approved. You then must register yourself to join the course. Within hours of registering, you should be able to access the class on Canvas.
