In English 1A, you will develop your reading, writing, critical thinking, and study skills. To reach the goals of this course, you will write well-developed expository essays, actively read various texts, take reading quizzes, participate in discussions with your peers, and complete other reading and writing activities in order to build your skills. You will also learn to effectively manage your time and study habits in order to be successful in this course and others that you are taking.
The class focuses on success, both in your personal life and in your career. You will write essays on how to develop soft skills (also known as "people skills"), mental health for college students, and a career of your choice.
English 1A + 1AS also includes two units of reading and writing support, as well as a dedicated tutor, who will work with you on all aspects of the class.
How the Course Works
This class is online asynchronous, which means there are no class meetings and all classwork and materials are located in Canvas.
You will usually complete one module a week. Some modules later in the semester extend over more than one week. Always review the due dates carefully.
I open new modules on Sundays.
Smaller assignments will usually be due Friday night and major assignments will usually be due the following Monday night.
Most materials are contained within Canvas, though you can and will be required to use your own research as well. You will also need to purchase The College Student's Guide to Mental Health by Mia Nosanow, which you can find on Amazon and at the CCSF Bookstore.
After the first day of class, if you would like to add the class, you will need to go to MyRam and submit a Class Add Request and I will add you if I have space. I drop students who have not completed required assignments after the first week, so I often have space then.
I add students from the Class Add Request lists in the order that I receive them, as space becomes available.
We don't have a midterm or a final. Work is usually due each week on Monday and Friday nights by 11:59 PM.
