STRUCTURED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
STRUCTURED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
When seeking to meet the needs of students with Autism, educators need to consider how the environment can help promote learning by meeting the needs of students with ASD.
Assistive Technology (AT) at school and home can support students with ASD. Here are some high and low tech AT suggestions.
In the videos below, teachers demonstrates how they set up their classrooms for students with ASD
Even a general education classroom can easily accommodate the recommended elements of a classroom for students with ASD using these design elements:
Visual Timetable: Since many individuals with ASD need routine and structure, it is very helpful for them to have an idea of what is happening when during their school day.

Cubbies and/or hooks for personal belongings: Students need a place to keep their coats and backpacks. The beginning and ending of the day should include time for them to organize their belongings to prepare for the school day and for going home.
Computer provision: Students need access to computers for learning and as a form of relaxation or fun. The classroom should be set up with work stations or with individual Chromebooks that students can take home and return to school as needed.
Quiet Space : Students with ASD benefit from a space connected to the classroom or an area designated to restore calmness, read, or relax

Storage cabinets: Fewer visual distractions can help students maintain their focus, so books, supplies, games and toys should be out of sight. This teacher has 7 cabinets of "like things" in labeled bins. Her cabinets include Kid Materials & Games, Teaching Materials and books, Paper Goods, Left-overs, Student Materials, Art Supplies, and Cleaning Supplies. Enjoy her Three minute cabinet tour!
Ideally, a classroom should have natural light. If not, tone down harsh fluorescent lights in the classroom with store bought filters or home made covers. Lower light helps kids to study in a calm, stress free zone.
