Living and Non Living Things
1.LS.1 Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from the physical environment.
K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
K-ESS3-1 Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals and the places they live.
Lessons Developed by Laurie Trotter
Description: Students will learn about the characteristics of living vs. non living things. Students will read some text and vocabulary. Families are invited to go in their backyard or garden and observe and document Living and Non Living items.

Life Cycles
Standard: 3.LS.3: Plants and animals have life cycles that are part of their adaptations for survival in their natural environments.
Lessons developed by Corey Bubon
Lesson 1: 30 minutes
Description: Students will investigate the life cycle of a butterfly by watching a video and reviewing slides. Students will also record their observations as the butterfly goes through the different stages of its life cycle.
Lesson 2: 30 minutes
Description: Students will learn about life cycles of different organisms by reviewing the slides. Students will complete the Venn Diagram template and use it to write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the life cycles of two different organisms.
Lesson 3: 30 -40 minutes
Description: Students will learn about the life cycle of a plant by watching a video, reviewing slides, and reading an article. Students will also record their observations of the life cycle of a plant on the investigation template.
Lesson 4: 30 minutes
Description: Students will learn how plants adapt to their surroundings to get their basic needs met and ward off predators so they can live and grow in certain environments. The students will review the slides, watch a video and take a quiz.
Lesson 5: 40 minutes
Description: Students are invited to observe the plants and animals that they notice in the environment around them, collect evidence, and determine which part of their life cycle they're in. Students are also invited to research, draw and label the life cycle of a plant or watch a video and create their own plant.
