Surprises are for birthdays and stories. When writing a historical pieces, we want our reader to know where we are going and how we are going to get there. A topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. It should give the reader the main ideas of the paragraph.
When writing a Topic sentence, there are 4 approaches we can take to help us become better writers:

The Vikings knew that if they were able to build effective boats, then they would be able to be effective in raids.
Even though the Vikings were fearsome warriors, it was they use of boats that assisted them the most in raids.
Since the Vikings were master ship builders, they were able to be much more effective in raids.
When the Vikings used ships in raids, they became much more effective in their raids.
Remember: Your topic sentence should tell the reader the main TOPIC of what you are writing about.
