Why take the PSAT 8/9?
The beginning of a student’s college journey
PSAT 8/9
Magnolia chooses to provide the opportunity for 8th graders to take the 8/9 version of the PSAT free of charge. This experience will establish a starting point for college and career readiness as your student transitions through high school.
· Reading and Writing Section—the student is expected to be able to:
o read passages and draw simple conclusions
o identify relationships described in the passages based on information in the text
o determine meanings from graphs or text
o have knowledge about punctuation in simple contexts
o be able to recognize and edit grammatical challenges such as introductory phrases
o analyze and incorporate graphics
· Math Section—The student is expected to be able to:
o solve problems that require one or two steps to solve
o solve ratios, percents, proportions, introductory probability, statistics, and linear equations and functions
o The student is NOT expected to know trigonometric ratios yet
The results, which usually are received in December, will reveal those areas in which your student will need to make the most score improvements for the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT. Your student will have two years to prepare to take the PSAT/NMSQT as an 11th grader for an opportunity to become a National Merit Scholar.
The PSAT 8/9 is twenty minutes shorter than the PSAT, clocking in at 2 hours, 25 minutes, and has five fewer Reading, ten fewer Math, and four fewer Writing and Language questions. The scores range from 240–1440 compared to the PSAT/NMSQT score range of 320-1520.
