Ready…..or not? Previous MSAP grant recipients know that it is never too soon to begin pulling things together for the next competition. And, if MSA is successful, there will be close to $18 million more available than in recent competitions. This will be a great opportunity for schools and districts to seek funding. Hear from a panel of grantees on things you can be doing to start preparing now.
The challenges of operating an International Baccalaureate program Magnet School within a comprehensive high school is full of pitfalls. This is the only IB program in a comprehensive school in the State of New Mexico. There are challenges scheduling, recruitment, with the AP program and with facilities. Find out how to overcome these obstacles in a panel discussion with questions and answers.
The evolution and reflection; bringing the magnet back to the magnet school. The beginning steps of reflection and tough conversation, to the work of recommitting to the magnet theme, and building magnet identity. Using the momentum and evolution to turnaround a struggling school.
Join us in the journey of two principals that took on the challenge of redesigning their alternative schools to meet MSA standards while cultivating and nurturing rebounding students. College & Career High School in Albuquerque, NM is a 6-year old 9th-12th grade Early College High School with the expectation that its students graduate from high school with an Associate's Degree or Certificate. The program is free for students, and the partnership with Central New Mexico Community College is paramount to its success. This session describes the school's model, its partnership with CNM, and recruitment strategies.
"Making things that work and making things work better" isn't just our motto at Engineering The Future - it epitomizes how we, as a team, are discovering our new roles as STEM implementation coaches.
Meet Claire, Lana, and Abel. They are STEM Implementation Coaches for the new Engineering The Future K-12 pathway in Albuquerque Public Schools. The team is in the midst of their second school year of MSAP grant implementation and are working together with the district's Office of Innovation, three school administrations, and K-12 teachers and students as they define their roles and foster changes focused on inquiry, curiosity, collaboration, and rigor. So what has the team learned so far? What is an implementation coach? How can this role help a school/program?
In this session, we will discuss our evolving roles as implementation coaches and elaborate on how we are stronger together - playing off of each other's variety of strengths, experiences, and backgrounds. We will work in small groups to assess the needs for such a role in your program, develop a list of requirements/job description for such a role, and evaluate the strengths and backgrounds of current members of school teams.
With school choice clearly a feature of the American education landscape, understanding parent school decision-making is essential. This session presents the findings of a recent study which investigated the perspective of parents who choose magnet schools. An analysis of 984 surveys and data from focus groups reveals important sources of information parents use in their school search, factors that influence them to apply to a magnet school, features of charter and private schools that attract them, and reasons for choosing a magnet school. The session concludes with implications for practice.
Have you thought about becoming a Nationally Certified Magnet School, but are not certain if you are ready? If so, don’t miss our readiness snapshot into the certification journey! Participants will explore and analyze the level of preparedness of the conditions, attitudes and resources, in their magnet schools and programs. We will simulate a quasi-certification activity, and will work to assist the magnet school teams and leadership in evaluating where the strengths and challenges are for each program that can be used in strategic planning for school improvement efforts.
