What is a compound sentence?
A compound sentence is one of three things:
(1) two simple sentences (independent clauses) joined together with a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS).
Example:
(2) two simple sentences joined together with ONLY a semicolon
Example:
(3) two simple sentences joined together with a semicolon AND a transitional word.
