Unit 0 - Clay
What are we learning?
I can make coils of clay
I can properly use the clay tools (wooden knife, needle tool, turntable)
I can build a clay container using the techniques show in class
What to expect in this unit?
Students will get a chance to practice and learn the tools and techniques
Students will see examples of finished ceramics
Students will learn how to fix problems, clean up, and how to store their clay
Why does this unit matter?
This is our first lesson in 3D art. It sets the tone for getting time to try new techniques and build our confidence before completing our summative.
Unit 2 - Block Printing
What are we learning?
I can learn how to properly sketch and shade for my 2x2 formative design
I can practice craving our linocut block and try using the 3 different carving tips
I can practice using the different colors of ink and get used to the rollers and paper printing process.
What to expect in this unit?
Students will get a chance to draw and design a theme of their choice
Students will see examples of past student work
Students will learn how to properly carve and print and how to fix mistakes
Students will update and use their digital portfolio and google classroom to document their work.
Why does this unit matter?
Students have drawn before but the process of carving into their linocut blocks adds a 3D element to this fun drawing project. By the end of this unit, students should more fully understand the carving/printing process and feel way more comfortable with these new techniques and materials.
Unit 2 - Mandala Rock Painting (Advanced Art)
What are we learning?
I can learn how to properly sketch using a compass and protractor
I can mix colors of paint and use appropriate brushes sizes
I can experiment with different techniques and use real artists to inspire my work.
What to expect in this unit?
Students will get a chance to draw their design and practice painting
Students will see examples of past student work
Students will learn how to properly apply their dots of paint and how to fix mistakes
Students will update and use their digital portfolio to document their work.
Why does this unit matter?
Students have painted before but the challenge of painting a small 3D surface with the expectation of high details is a challenge .
Unit 1 - Word Art (3D Art)
What are we learning?
I can learn how to properly sketch different styles/fonts of lettering.
I can draw my letters into a shape using a combination of uppercase and lowercase.
I can choose a theme for my word art and create an appropriate background.
I can accurately cut and glue my design using a variety of colors of construction paper.
What to expect in this unit?
Students will get a chance to draw their design and practice cutting.
Students will see examples of past student work.
Students will learn how to draw different types of lettering and how to use either scissors or an Xacto knife to cut with precision.
Students will update and use their digital portfolio to document their work.
Why does this unit matter?
Students have have been cutting and gluing paper since early elementary school. This adds a level of creativity while also doing something challenging.
Unit 2 - Wood Burning (3D Art)
What are we learning?
I can learn how to properly sketch using the mandala design.
I can use a compass, ruler, and protractor
I can create a variety of symbols, patterns, and themes. I will apply these to my formative sketch.
I can accurately shade in my deisgn to add depth and contrast.
What to expect in this unit?
Students will get a chance to draw their design and practice wood burning before starting their summative.
Students will see examples of past student work.
Students will learn how to draw different types of mandalas and research designs.
Students will use videos of mandalas being created and a demonstration of how to properly and safely use the wood burner and safety glasses.
Why does this unit matter?
Students are taking a drawing and design technique and taking it to the next level by introducing the 3D element of wood burning. It takes patience and planning...wood burners don't have an eraser!
