Phonics is a way to teach reading and writing that includes the matching of letters to sounds. Phonics involves children decoding (sound out/read) and encoding (spelling) words.
There are several words in the English language that do not follow the “rules”. These are often referred to as irregular, red, sight, or heart words. At MCPS, we use a curriculum that lists High Frequency Words. Many of these words are irregular, and we encourage students to be able to read the words on their grade-level lists automatically. A great way to practice High Frequency words is by making flash cards and practicing daily.
Encoding is commonly referred to as spelling.
Fluency is the term used to describe a student's ability to read with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression.
Comprehension, or understanding what you have read, is the ultimate goal of reading. Practice comprehension by asking simple who, what, when, where, and why questions while reading with your student.
