A flipped classroom is a form of learning where instruction and new material are delivered at home via a video. Class time is then devoted to activities, small group instruction, exercises, projects and discussions that meet each student's individual needs.
Each night for homework, students will access the chapter and section they are responsible for. Students will watch a short video teaching them the new mathematical skill. When students are finished, they will answer a series of questions demonstrating their new knowledge. Students will instantly receive an e-mail with a summary of their assignment.
When students come into class the next day, they will be grouped depending on their performance on the material from the night before. If students showed mastery of the skill, they will move on to more challenging activities. If students struggled with certain concepts, they will receive additional instruction in the classroom with hands-on activities and the use of manipulatives to help them better understand the content being taught. Please note that ALL students are more than welcome to join small group instruction if they feel that it will be helpful for them.
A flipped classroom model is beneficial to students. parents and teachers. Students benefit from the flipped classroom because they are getting their individual needs met each and every day. If students show mastery on a topic, they do not need to sit and listen to a half hour lecture on that particular topic. Instead, they can engage in accelerated activities and receive more challenging instruction in a small group setting. If students struggle with a concept, they can receive more individualized instruction on the areas in which they had difficulty.
The flipped classroom benefits parents because they are able to watch the videos with their children and see how the content is being taught in the classroom. Many times parents try to help their children with their homework, but they hear in response, "That's not the way my teacher taught me how to do it." The flipped classroom allows parents to see what content is being covered in the classroom, as well as how that content is being delivered. Parents will also receive e-mails about their child's performance on nightly homework assignments. This will help parents see what their child's strengths and weaknesses are.
In order for this model to be successful, you will need to do your part at home. In the place of standard homework, you will be often be asked to watch a video and take notes on a given topic. It is important that you make time for this step. This way, you are able to participate in the in-class activities during school. Don't worry so much if you don't understand a topic. We will reinforce or reteach any topics if necessary!
