2nd Grade News

Here at Rose Lane, we have a very strong and supportive P.B.I.S- School Wide Discipline Program in place.

Over the last couple of weeks. the children have been soaring with good behaviors and have earned Dojo points and Rose Lane loops along the way. In the event that a child is displaying problem behaviors, he/she is given opportunities to reflect on their actions and what the expectations are at that time and place. If a student consistently does not follow the SOAR expectations he/she will receive a Minor Incident Report (MIR). The MIR notice is a communication/documentation piece that keeps us focused and connected in our home/school partnership. Together we can solve issues and concerns that may arise. Thanks for your support in all our endeavors with the children.

Ongoing Home Practice for Literacy and Reading on grade level

Second grade is a big transition year. This is the year your child “reads to learn” Now, and in subsequent newsletters we will begin to discuss and review the necessity of your child becoming an independent reader and what that will mean for overall function and success in this transition year. Our 2nd grade Literacy instruction concentrates on developing and extending comprehension, accuracy, fluency and vocabulary skills. We work with a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts and resources that are aligned with the common core.

At the end of this 1st quarter, your child should know the first set of approximately 150+ sight words which includes recognizing them instantly and reading all of them fluently. After the 1st and 2nd 100 lists are memorized, we move on to each new set of subsequent lists. Periodically, different lists will be sent home for those children who need extra practice. During the month of September, you may find a list of sight words if child is not solid in this area. Please support with extra practice at home as it is absolutely fundamental in order to develop and extend all literacy skills. Spend about 5 minutes a day on this. The key is repeated daily practice over and over again (5 minutes worth) Listen to the word, say the word, and memorize the word. That’s what we do in the classroom. This and other Important literacy milestones will be detailed at October Conferences. Your support at home is greatly appreciated.

Ongoing Home Practice for Math

Looking on the horizon, over the next couple of months, your child needs to have a good handle on addition and subtraction facts up to 20. If your child is not fast and fluent it will hamper them as we move on to other grade level concepts that build upon basic fact knowledge. All of this is grade level expectation aligned with standards.

Volunteer Help TEAM/Classroom- TEAM is our school’s parent/teacher organization. This is a great way to get involved at your child’s school. TEAM sponsors several programs and events that benefit the school and your child. They are always looking for parent volunteers. Please visit TEAM website if you are interested in offering your time and services.

We have had several parents reach out and ask how they could individually assist in the classroom. It is important that these first couple months are filled with learning routines and procedures. Thank you for your flexibility and patience as we work towards finding our areas of need and support in the classroom. Stay tuned!

There will be check-ins during the quarter for accountability and completion. Booklets will be collected at the end of quarter 1. Approximately 20 minutes each night should be dedicated to homework..
