Sept 15-19

  • This week we will begin Chapter 3, Adding & Subtracting Decimals. We will start by estimating decimal numbers and then moving on to adding and subtracting. Near the end of the week we will solve problems related to money.

  • Our Chapter 3 test is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Sept 30th with the review on Monday, Sept 29th. This date could change based on where we are in our lessons.

  • IXL Chapter 3 practice: AA 1-14 and HH 1-3

  • A few tips for helping your child be successful in math:

    1. Encourage them to keep their work neat and organized (this is a BIG one)

    2. Remind them to slow down and do each step. Even when you feel like you can confidently skip steps, don't! We will get there eventually but we aren't there yet.

    3. Practice in IXL

    4. Watch videos posted to Google Classroom or the 5th grade website.

Sept 8-12

  • Last week we reviewed number properties and began learning the Order of Operations. This week we will continue evaluating numerical expressions using Ordre of Operations. You may remember this as PEMDAS. We will also create numerical expressions.

  • Our chapter 2 test is scheduled for Friday, Sept 12th with a review on Thursday, Sept 11th. The study guide and answer key are posted in Google Classroom.

Sept 2-5

  • We finished up chapter 1, which was a review of whole number and decimal place value. This week we are digging into chapter 2, Numerical Expressions. We will spend the first part of the week reviewing number properties. Each property, along with a description and example of each, will be glued into the vocab section of math binders. Additionally, we will have three vocabulary words:

      1. evaluate

      2. order of operations

      3. numerical expression

  • For the second part of the week we will begin learning the steps of Order of Operations or, PEMDAS. This skill can be a challenge for many students. Some things you can do to help your student be successful with Order of Operations:

      1. Encourage them to keep their work neat and organized (this is a BIG one)

      2. Remind them to slow down and do each step. Even when you feel like you can confidently skip steps, don't! We will get there eventually but we aren't there yet.

      3. Practice in IXL section H, lessons 1-11.

      4. Watch videos posted to Google Classroom or the 5th grade website.

  • Our first test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Sept 11th. Our test review is scheduled for Wednesday, the 10th. This date could get moved depending on how we're doing with this skill.
