Footwear
Cross country is an endurance sport. Our athletes put their bodies through a lot of stress to get into shape to run cross country. It is important that we control the stressors we have the ability to control in order to prevent injuries and optimize performances.
Trainers
All athletes will need a pair running shoes. Not just an athletic shoe, but an actual running shoe. It would be best if they were properly fit for their shoes, which can be done at any of the local running specialty stores (Movin' Shoes, Morgan's Running, Fleet Feet). These shoes will be what the athlete wears everyday to practice, as well as warm-ups and cool-downs on race days. Some athlete may also choose to race in their trainers. Trainers come in a wide variety based on the amount of arch support, cushion and weight. Again that is why it is important to get fit for the right shoe so you avoid injuries and enjoy your runs more. Purchasing shoes online can be a great way to save money, but before you do make sure you buying a shoe that is fit to the physiology of the athlete.
Spikes
Spikes are not required for all athletes, but highly encouraged, especially if that athlete wants to be as competitive as possible. Spikes offer no support and next to no cushion. Their sole purpose is to provide athletes with extra traction in an extra light shoe for maximum speed.
Apparel
High tech running apparel is not a necessity for running, however for some athletes it makes their running experience more enjoyable. When it comes to running apparel making sure each athlete has clothing that is comfortable is the number one priority.
As our season progresses the weather can begin to get very cold, so having appropriate layers including hats and gloves will be a necessity. *Any day that the temperature is below 40 degrees fahrenheit athletes will be required to have leggings, pants or tights to cover their legs.
Accessories
When it comes to accessories there are numerous options from compression sleeves to sunglasses, but nothing that is required to have an enjoyable experience running. The one item that is highly suggested is a running watch. This does not need to be a watch with GPS capability, simply a watch with a stopwatch feature so athletes know how long they are running or to help them with their splits in workouts.
