Every adult within the school can help support and be part of our programs. When adults enter and students engage with them, even with just saying hello, it can be an opportunity to connect, build language skills, and social emotional skills.
This was 1 example of a schedule to support at EA, or for a subsitute coming in so they have clear directions for each part of the schedule.
At the start of the year, this can be a document that the teacher and EA co-create to ensure that everyone understands what to do and how to support students throughout the day.
Every moment of 4K is Teachable Moment
4k Learners are learning to…
Do more tasks independently-please don’t do things for them, teach them how to do it for themselves and remind them how to ask for help when needed. Praise the effort, not the finished product! “ You kept trying to open that milk!” instead of “good job”
Talk to their friends-model conversations, give plenty of wait time for them to think and talk for themselves
Solve problems-please don’t solve problems for them, model ways to solve problems, let them talk for themselves and encourage them to share their emotions.
Manipulate objects in the world around them-they need to explore, move, and use materials in non-traditional ways—play with children, model ways to play, follow their lead
Every moment of 4K is an Assessable Moment
Teachers are constantly observing, looking to see:
How children are responding—During group times, if not prepping for the next task, you can support children by encouraging their active participation, supporting students who need a break or additional support, (if needed after some redirection from teacher)
How children follow directions—please give them time to listen and follow teacher’s directions before stepping in or redirecting a student
How children participate in the activity-please give children a chance to do the activity themselves and to do “the best that they can”
How children take care of themselves-please don’t do things for them, give them the opportunity to try to do it themselves
Every moment of 4K is a Purposeful Moment
Teachers plan:
Vocabulary—purposefully reuse the content vocabulary that the teacher is using and look for ways for the students to try using new vocabulary on their own.
Routines—the songs and transitions a teacher plans for each day have purpose, You can support the kids by joining in the transition routines as well.
Activities—4K has nearly 40 standards to be addressed—activities are planned to address these standards and the specific skills and goals of individual students—please keep the purpose in mind when interacting with kids—if you are unsure of any of the goals for 4k just ask!
Final, 4K thoughts:
Supporting 4k Learners is a TEAM EFFORT! The days can be hectic and not much time for adults to talk with one another, plan or reflect while the kids are there. Communication before or after the day is welcome as schedules allow!
