In order to keep our students safe, MSCR Programming will follow precautions set by the school district and will be providing programming virtually as long as school is being held virtually. Virtual Programming will begin on September 14th, is being held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with 1-3 clubs/day. The clubs will have the same focus as during the school year: academic and recreational enrichment. Some examples might include: Homework Club, Black Student Union, Cooking Club, Game Club, Fitness Club, etc. There will also be opportunities for students to connect with other MSCR students in different clubs focused on community building, social justice, recreation and physical activity, such as: Girl's Inc., Spoken Word, PowerUp Fitness, etc. Programming will continue to be offered during after school hours and any Black Hawk student is able to attend. We look forward to seeing many familiar faces!
For The Urban League of Greater Madison's Schools of Hope tutoring program, we will be placing volunteer tutors in classrooms with students who need extra academic support in a virtual or in-person setting. This year we will be focusing on all subject areas and can provide 1-on-1 or small group support during and after the school day. Since going virtual, this is an "opt-out" program, meaning your student may receive this service unless the family emails the Tutor Coordinator stating they don't want their child to be a part of the program.
All tutors get trained and will be monitored by the classroom teacher or the Tutor Coordinator. We make placements based on tutor and student availability, and teacher or parent referral.
All updates and schedules can be found in the Weekly Wolf. If you have any specific questions, please contact Ilaina Smith, MSCR-BHMS Site Director, irsmith3@madison.k12.wi.us / 608-220-4868.
Black Hawk’s Black Student Union fosters student growth and development through diversity, discussion and outreach. BSU provides an opportunity for students to celebrate Black culture, lifestyle, and history. We will enrich the lives of students, faculty, staff and the community at large. Through communication, we will all learn more about the world around us and ourselves. Together, we have the power to create change. BSU is what we DO!
Gay Straight Alliance (GSA for short) aims to unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their school and communities. During COVID-19, we have been working hard to build a safe (virtual) space for students to discuss and process what it looks like and how it feels to be LGBTQ+ and allied youth in the midst of a global pandemic.
Restorative Justice Club is all about joy, community, and the students! We use clubs as a way to build community, give students leadership opportunities, and train students to become circle keepers and lead circles to deal with harm. We also use circles to heal, build trust, and have fun! We play games, watch videos, and learn what restorative justice means and how we can use it to make Black Hawk a better place.
This year the ULGM will be offering online workshops for families on how they can support their students during online learning!
