Regular attendance plays a vital role in student achievement and is an important life skill that will help students graduate from college and keep a job. Students who do not attend school regularly miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance. Absences can be minimized by scheduling medical, dental, and other appointments after school or when school is not in session. Vacations should be planned around holidays. Parents must make school attendance a priority.
How to Clear an Absence?
Absences must be cleared by one of the following methods:
The parent/guardian may call the front office at 559-662-2662 ext. 1101, preferably on the day of the absence.
Students may bring a note upon their return to school. Notes must be dropped off to the attendance secretary by the end of the school day.
Parents may email the attendance secretary at joselcortesramirez@maderausd.org to excuse an absence. Please include the student's name, date of absence, reason for absence, and the best way to be reached.
Parents can clear a student's absence(s) via ParentSquare.
Parents can submit an absence report via Google Forms using the link below.
23/24 SY Rose Elementary Absence Report
Note: All absences must be cleared within 72 hours of absence(s) with the Attendance Secretary.
What is an “excused absence”?
Absences for the following reasons are excused:
Illness (stomachache, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.)
Medical, Dental, Optometric, or Chiropractic Appointment
Funeral for an immediate family member
Justifiable personal reasons approved by the principal or designee ( i.e.,/ court appearance, holiday, or ceremony observance of his/her religion) must be approved in advance by the administrator in order to be considered excused.
What is considered an “unexcused absence”?
Uncleared all-day absences become unexcused if they have not been cleared by the end of the school day after 72 hours of an absence. It is your responsibility as a parent to ensure that the absence has been cleared and that there are no errors in your child’s attendance record.
Absences for the following reasons are unexcused:
Out of Town (ex: family is at Disneyland)
Personal Reason(s)
Tardies/Late Starts
Your child must arrive at school on time. School doors open at 7:30 AM for students who wish to have breakfast, and all students must be in class by 8:00 AM. Any student(s) who arrived after 8:00 AM are considered tardy and must be checked in by the attendance clerk.
NOTE: A student is considered truant after three absences or tardies of more than 30 minutes each time or any combination.
Students should not be sent to school if they have any of the following signs or symptoms:
Fever (over 100 degrees). Keep the student at home until they have not had a fever for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication (e.g., Tylenol, Motrin).
Eyes that are red, swollen, crusting, or draining. The student may return to school when his/her eyes clear out entirely or with a doctor’s note stating it's “non-contagious.”
Head lice. Students with head lice may return to school after they have been treated with an appropriate lice shampoo and there is no evidence of live lice in their hair.
Vomiting/Diarrhea. Keep the student at home until they have not vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours.
Skin rashes. A skin rash of unknown origin or a contagious rash requires clearance from a health care provider that states the student is not contagious and may return to school. Otherwise, the student may return when the rash has cleared.
Any illness that requires prescribed antibiotic treatment. The student must complete 24 hours of treatment prior to returning to school.
If there is a reasonable suspicion that a student is ill with any of the above signs or symptoms while at school, the parent will be asked to pick up the student.
What if I have to pick up my student during the school day?
For student safety, anyone attempting to pick up a student must show a form of identification (picture ID) before the student's release. Student(s) may only be released to parent/guardian and/or others on the student’s emergency contact list.
NOTE: To preserve instructional time, the school discourages parents/guardians from picking students up early from school during the last 30 minutes of the school day.
