EXPECTATIONS FOR CONDUCT

• The ability to establish a purposeful environment is what distinguishes the great school from the average school. Dixieland Elementary enforces the following rules to provide such an environment:

Ø Students have a right to learn and teachers have a right to teach. Any behavior which interferes with that right is unacceptable.

Ø All persons at Dixieland Elementary have a right to a safe environment free of physical danger and mental or verbal harassment. Any behavior which interferes with that right is unacceptable.

Ø All persons at Dixieland Elementary have a right to be treated with respect, courtesy, and dignity. Any behavior which interferes with that right is unacceptable.

Ø All students are expected to pursue their studies and participate in the programs and activities of the school in a positive, cooperative manner. Any behavior contrary to that is unacceptable

DISCIPLINE PROGRAM AND PROCEDURES

• Dixieland Elementary School employs a “progressive discipline’ system. This system increases the teacher/office response to aberrant student behaviors for three reasons: 1. It is an effective, Ed Code-based strategy to maintain order in our classrooms and the school at large, 2. It is very effective in applying “enough but not too much” punishment for initial misbehaviors and 3. It maximizes consistency in the application of the school rules.

• Dixieland School employs a Five-step progressive discipline program.
• WHAT ARE “STEPS”?

Step process

“Steps” are documented behaviors/responses. Steps are given for “the disruption of the educational process”, specifically “disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, school officials, or other school personnel engaged in the performance of their duties” (48900.k).

Step 1:

1. Warning & reinforcement - Student/Teacher conference
2. Appropriate consequence per grade level
3. Notice of concern (teacher) sent home and signed by parent
4. Teacher documents Step Form

Step 2:

1. Student / Teacher / Parent conference
2. Appropriate consequence per grade level
3. Notice of concern (teacher) sent home and signed by parent
4. Teacher documents Step Form

Step 3:

1. Teacher documents Step Form- issues a referral
2. Administrative conference in office
3. Parent contact by administrator
4. Behavior contract (administrator discretion, after the Student Behavior Contract is signed, a copy of the contract will be placed in the teacher’s box.)

Step 4:

1. Teacher documents Step Form
2. Parent / Teacher / Student / Administrator conference
3. Review Behavior Contract
4. Loss of Privilege (LOP)- decided by administrator

Step 5:

1. Teacher documents Step Form
2. Parent / Teacher / Student / Administrator conference
3. Suspension

* Major infraction students will automatically go to LOP & / or suspension

Remember - steps are for classroom disruptions and violations of established rules (student behaviors which keep teachers from teaching or students from learning). Lack of completed work either in class or at home will not be considered under the progressive discipline step form.

In addition, Student Defiance/Disruption cases must be substantiated and documentation of frequency is required. The teacher must provide students with the opportunity to remediate the behavior in addition to provide interventions for the student. This includes a referral to the RtI COST team and creating a behavior contract, if behavior is habitual.

Placing students outside the front or back door for time-out will not be a practice at Dixieland Elementary School.
