My late grandpa is depicted in this portrait. He passed away when I was young, so my memory is fragile, represented by the separated blocks. The limited, warm palette expresses his gentle nature and the detail of his smile. I began with a burnt umber underpainting, with the blocks taped together while I painted the portrait. Beginning with the darkest colours, I used lighter colours in the upper layers – attempting the fat-over-lean technique.
